Reduce the Use of Toxic ChemicalsResolution C026 |
Environment: Reduce the Use of Toxic ChemicalsResolved, That the 74th General Convention urge congregations, dioceses, provinces and all church institutions to initiate a plan in the next triennium for the management of church buildings and grounds that phases out the use of unsafe pesticides, herbicides and other toxic chemicals to control pests and undesirable plants, and institutes the use of alternatives, recognizing that children are the population most susceptible to toxins; and be it further Resolved, That the appropriate standing committee report back to the 75th General Convention regarding the ongoing effectiveness of this work. Explanation:This resolution positions the Episcopal Church with schools, municipalities, public health officials and citizen groups concerned about adverse impacts of use of pesticides and other toxic chemicals on the health of children as well as on adults who work in industries where such products are used.Effective alternatives exist in the use of green practices and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to maintain and rehabilitate buildings and grounds. IPM uses biodegradable and non-toxic products, eliminates substances posing the greatest risk of harm and manages the pest problem in systemic ways. Submitted by: Diocese
