Executive Council Resolution prior to
70th General Convention (1991)
of the Episcopal Church, USA

The 70th General Convention of the Episcopal Church, USA met in Phoenix, AZ, in July 1991. Prior to the General Convention, the Executive Council passed the following Resolution:

Commendation of the JPIC Report from the World Council of Churches

Executive Council resolution: EXC061990.36

Resolved, That the Executive Council receive the Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC) document from the World Council of Churches (Seoul, March 1990); and be it further

Resolved, That the issues of global economic justice, militarism, environmentalism and racism as addressed in the report be commended to the dioceses and congregations for study, reflection and response, especially as they are seen as interconnected issues; and be it further

Resolved, That work on these issues be encouraged ecumenically and that congregations and dioceses consider making local and regional covenants with ecumenical partners around the four issue areas; and be it further

Resolved, That $20,000 be appropriated from the Constable Fund to enable a consultation called by the Presiding Bishop for the preparation of a major policy statement on the environment and sustainable development to be considered by the 1991 General Convention; and be it further

Resolved, That the Standing Commissions on Human Affairs and World Mission be encouraged to work together to bring this report jointly to the General Convention in 1991; and be it further

Resolved, That to remain a partner Church in the JPIC process as the WCC plans for further discussions at its Assembly meeting in Canberra next February [sic].

The EpEN is a national network of active lay and clergy persons within the Episcopal Church, USA, who share a common concern for the environment and a common belief in the presence of God in all Creation and who work to make these concerns and beliefs known throughout all Provinces and Dioceses within the church. Members come from around the Episcopal Church USA. The activities of the EpEN are focused on the areas of Reflection, Education, and Action.
